There are a total of 18 categories for the 2010 PGDA, grouped under 3 divisions: Professional Categories, Student Categories, and Open Categories. In order to be eligible for entry, a work must abide by PGDA’s definition of graphic design: "the art and discipline of combining symbols, design, and words to represent and communicate ideas or messages."

CATEGORIES FOR PROFESSIONAL GRAPHIC DESIGNERS

A single-piece entry for the Professional Categories requires only one design piece while a multiple-piece entry requires several examples or renditions of the design to be considered as one entry. Professional graphic designers may send in as many entries in as many categories as they wish.

CATEGORY 1. DIRECT COMMUNICATIONS (SINGLE-PIECE ENTRY) – PROFESSIONAL

Category 1 includes printed flat, folded, or three-dimensional ("3D") invitations or mailers typically used for direct marketing communication to announce a special activity, event, or occasion.

CATEGORY 2. POSTER (SINGLE-PIECE ENTRY) – PROFESSIONAL

Category 2 includes handmade or machine-printed graphic design pieces used for advertising, advocacy, communications, education, or entertainment.

CATEGORY 3. PACKAGING (SINGLE-PIECE ENTRY) – PROFESSIONAL

Category 3 includes functional, 3D food- or non-food packaging pieces such as product boxes, bottles, bags, labels, holders, or similar.

CATEGORY 4. OUTDOOR GRAPHICS (SINGLE-PIECE ENTRY) – PROFESSIONAL

Category 4 includes pieces used for fixed or semi-permanent outdoor installations such as billboards, bus stops, light boxes, street banners, or ambient ads as well as mobile outdoor installations such as vehicle wraps or transit ads.

CATEGORY 5. WEBSITE (SINGLE-PIECE ENTRY) – PROFESSIONAL

Category 5 includes static, dynamic, database-driven, or software-based websites used for personal, commercial, or non-commercial purposes.

CATEGORY 6. MOTION GRAPHICS (SINGLE-PIECE ENTRY) – PROFESSIONAL

Category 6 includes animated graphic design pieces for movie or television OBBs, movie and television titles, animated presentations, online banners, or similar.

CATEGORY 7. SELF-PROMOTION (SINGLE-PIECE ENTRY) – PROFESSIONAL

Category 7 includes printed flat, folded, or 3D design pieces used for self-promotion by a graphic designer, or similarly, pieces done by a graphic designer to promote a design agency.

CATEGORY 8. APPLIED GRAPHICS (SINGLE ENTRY) – PROFESSIONAL

Category 8 includes 3D design pieces that do not fall in previously-defined categories such as caps, t-shirts, bags, skateboards, watches, or similar.

CATEGORY 9. IDENTITY (MULTIPLE-PIECE ENTRY) – PROFESSIONAL

Category 9 includes logos representing a company, organization, association, brand, or product. A multiple-piece entry requires several examples or renditions of the design but shall be considered as one entry. At least three examples of the logo’s application are required, e.g. in a letterhead, in a calling card, and in a marketing piece.

CATEGORY 10. BOUND PIECES (MULTIPLE-PIECE ENTRY) – PROFESSIONAL

Category 10 includes bound or collected design pieces such as brochures, catalogs, calendars, magazines, annual reports, or books. A multiple-piece entry requires several layouts but shall be considered as one entry. At least three layouts are required, e.g. a cover page, a table of contents spread, and an inner page section header.

CATEGORY 11. INTEGRATED GRAPHICS (MULTIPLE-PIECE ENTRY) – PROFESSIONAL

Category 11 includes pieces where the design has been applied to more than one format, e.g. in a promotional direct mail piece, a point-of-sale material, and an online banner.

CATEGORIES FOR GRAPHIC DESIGN STUDENTS

A single-piece entry for the Student Categories requires only one design piece while a multiple-piece entry requires several examples or renditions of the design to be considered as one entry. Graphic design students may send in as many entries in as many categories as they wish.

CATEGORY 12. POSTER (SINGLE-PIECE ENTRY) – STUDENT

Category 12 includes handmade or machine-printed graphic design pieces created for a fictitious or already existing advertising, advocacy, communications, education, or entertainment program as well as pieces created for any school-based activity.

CATEGORY 13. PACKAGING (SINGLE-PIECE ENTRY) – STUDENT

Category 13 includes functional, 3D food- or non-food packaging pieces for a fictitious or an already existing product such as product boxes, bottles, bags, labels, holders, or similar as well as pieces created for any school-based activity.

CATEGORY 14. WEBSITE (SINGLE ENTRY) – STUDENT

Category 14 includes static, dynamic, database-driven, or software-based websites used for personal, commercial, or non-commercial purposes for a fictitious or already existing company, organization, or personality as well as websites created for any school-based activity.

CATEGORY 15. APPLIED GRAPHICS (SINGLE ENTRY) – STUDENT

Category 15 includes design pieces that do not fall in previously-defined categories such as caps, t-shirts, bags, skateboards, watches, or similar, created for a fictitious or already existing company as well as pieces created for any school-based activity.

CATEGORY 16. IDENTITY (MULTIPLE-PIECE ENTRY) – STUDENT

Category 16 includes logos designed for a fictitious or an already existing company, organization, association, brand, or product as well as logos created for any school-based activity. A multiple-piece entry requires several examples or renditions of the design but shall be considered as one entry. At least three examples of the logo’s application are required, e.g. in a letterhead, in a calling card, and in a marketing piece.

OPEN CATEGORIES

An entry for the Open Categories can be any graphic design piece created by a professional graphic designer or a graphic design student as a form of self expression. Professional graphic designers and graphic design students may send in as many entries in as many categories as they wish. As the category names suggest, an entry is either a hardcopy piece or a digital artwork.

CATEGORY 17. OFFLINE (SINGLE-PIECE ENTRY) – PROFESSIONAL AND STUDENT

Category 17 includes handmade or machine-printed graphic design pieces best viewed or experienced offline.

CATEGORY 18. ONLINE (SINGLE-PIECE ENTRY) – PROFESSIONAL AND STUDENT

Category 18 includes any graphic design piece best viewed or experienced digitally, preferably via online.

PGDA encourages entrants to select the category that best describes the nature and purpose of the design piece but will allow the same piece to be entered into another category. In such cases, a separate entry fee shall be imposed on the work for every category to which it is submitted as an entry.
