The Philippine Graphic Design Awards or PGDA is the first and only local awards program in the Philippines that recognizes the most creative and innovative artwork in the field of graphic design. By PGDA's definition, graphic design is the art and discipline of combining symbols, design, and words to represent and communicate ideas or messages.
Drew Europeo first gained acclaim for her skills in web design at the 2000 Philippine Web Awards where she won "Best Portal of the Year" for Adobo Magazine and again in 2002 for "Best in the Arts" for Halfproject, a design community she co-founded in early 2000. She has since been asked to judge a number of award programs herself including the Philippine Web Awards, Toyota Art Edge Digital Art Competition, and the Bubu Awards Indonesia. She also co-founded Philweavers and co-published a compilation of black and white illustrations entitled “Blackflood.” Throughout the decade her work has been featured in a number of local and international design magazines, websites, and news papers. She has confirmed her slot as a judge of the first Philippine Graphic Design Awards and shares some helpful tips for emerging graphic designers.

INTERVIEW What makes a graphic design piece worthy of your merit?
Drew: Originality is on top of my list. I take into consideration the concept of the piece, execution, and techniques on how the piece was done.

What sets an outstanding Filipino graphic design piece apart from just a really good one?
Drew: A good concept, originality, and a very high standard of execution definitely sets the stage for an outstanding piece.

What was your lowest low and highest high as a graphic designer?
Drew: My lowest low would be when I was still finding myself out there, and in a depressed economy like now, normally project flow slows down so it was tough. The highest high was when I made a mark on the global design community. I made a name for myself somehow and received acknowledgements from different design groups from all around the globe.

How do you think PGDA will stir the industry?
Drew: I think PGDA will somehow start to play a role in the industry by creating some sort of a reference for the standards of what is really good (in terms of a design piece). The program can bring good exposure to the younger generation of designers and educate them on what is needed to strengthen Filipino graphic design and make it more noticeable.

What advice do you have for Filipinos who wish to pursue a career in graphic design?
Drew: It's ok to have inspirations and influences—we all have that anyway—but don't get carried away. Work to create your own style, study every technique available, and experiment a lot until you arrive at something that has not yet been seen before or at least something that you can say is truly your own. Be aware of what has already been done and innovate from there. Don't just do a piece because it looks good but really think about your concept and support it with outstanding visuals. Don't be discouraged by designers who really do their thing very well, there's a reason why they are that good. It is because they never stop learning and they never stop doing what they do, so instead of telling yourself that you can't achieve that, shut your mouth and start working.
